Comparing 2016 Player Performances to History: Part 3-Tight Ends

Like running backs and wide receivers, tight end statistics were down compared to prior seasons.  Part of the problem was that there was no Rob Gronkowski to post wide receiver-type numbers from the tight end position.  Gronk played only seven games, yet was productive enough to post the 25th best season among tight ends in '16.

The tight end champion of the season, however, was a first-time winner.  Travis Kelce, almost by forfeit, was the top tight end with 200 points.  And it took a six-week hot streak in weeks six through eleven, when he scored more than half of his points, to finish on top.

Compared to the best seasons in history, Kelce's 2016 ranks outside the top 1,500 individual seasons since 1970.  Among all tight end season, Kelce's season ranks #48 all-time.

The remainder of the 2016 top five:

1.  Travis Kelce-Kansas City (200)
2.  Greg Olsen-Carolina (182)
3.  Delanie Walker-Tennessee (164)
4.  Jimmy Graham-Seattle (163)
5.  Kyle Rudolph-Minnesota (162)

All-time, the top single-seasons are:

1.  2011-Rob Gronkowski-New England (308)
2.  2013-Jimmy Graham-New Orleans (282)
3.  2011-Jimmy Graham-New Orleans (271)
4.  1983-Todd Christensen-L.A. Raiders (265)
5.  1980-Kellen Winslow, Sr.-San Diego (249)

We'll finish the comparison between 2016 and fantasy football history tomorrow with a re-cap of the quarterback position.
