Chargers Tag Ingram

Salute: Pro Football Talk

Ingram joins pass-rushers Chandler Jones of the Cardinals and Jason Pierre-Paul of the Giants in getting the franchise tag, which buys their teams time to work on a long-term deal with the new league year set to open March 9.

The projected value of the Franchise Tag is $16.955M.

Antonio Brown Signs

Salute: Pro Football Talk

PFT has learned, via a league source, that it is a four-year extension to Brown’s current deal that is worth up to $68 million. He’ll make $17 million a year over those four years and $18.5 million a year over the first three years, which is more than Calvin Johnson received in his last deal with the Lions and more than any other wideout in the league is making on their current deals.

$19M of this contract is in the form of a signing bonus.  He remains the premier fantasy football wide receiver.

When Do Aging RB's Hit the Fantasy Wall?

Salute: Pro Football Focus

In general, running backs backs don’t “fall off a cliff” until their age-31 season — not their age-30 season. When discussing running backs who see a heavier workload (150 attempts per season), their fantasy production drops off during their age-29 season — not their age-30 season.

The Market For Jay Cutler

Salute: CBS Sports.com

As we initially reported nearly a month ago , Cutler won’t be back with the Bears. They’ll cut him if they can’t trade him -- news flash: It’s virtually certain they will be unable to trade him -- and they are all in on trying to trade for Patriots backup Jimmy Garoppolo themselves.

The Bears seemingly will take absolutely ANYTHING to move Cutler.

Salute: NFL Trade Rumors

According to Jason La Canfora, the Bears are shopping QB Jay Cutler and would take a 2019 seventh-round pick for him. However, Chicago obviously faces a tall task of finding a team willing to take on the $72 million over four years remaining on his contract.
Anyone who TRADES for Cutler should be charged with football malpractice.  Signing him after he's cut may be worth a low-money risk.  Fantasywise, unless he's the likely starter somewhere, you should just move along.

Top Ten Free Agent Tight Ends

Salute: Pro Football Focus

Franchises on the lookout for a tight end will be faced with slim pickings in this free agent class. There are a couple of productive veterans, followed by the expected handful of journeymen, followed by the specialists. Here’s are free agency’s top 10 tight ends.
To see Pro Football Focus’ full NFL free-agent rankings featuring the top 50 players set to hit the market in 2017, click here.

1. Martellus Bennett, New England Patriots (79.8 overall 2016 grade)

Bennett enjoyed a resurgence of sorts with the Super Bowl champion Patriots. He struggled through injury toward the end of the year, but still caught 55 passes for 700 yards and seven touchdowns, dropping just a pair of passes. The former Cowboy, Giant and Bear is a fine blocker too, even if he was hampered toward the tail end of 2016. Bennett is a legitimate feature tight end capable of inflicting serious damage in the intermediate passing game. Chances are he’ll fancy a return to the franchise that revived his career, but New England will likely face competition to his services.

2. Jack Doyle, Indianapolis Colts (76.0)

The light seemed to come on for Doyle midway through 2016. He registered impressive grades in each of his last nine games. Seeing a snap boost of close to 40 percent, Doyle responded with 59 catches from 82 targets (82-percent catch rate) for 584 yards, five touchdowns and only three drops. He has reliable hands, dropping only three of 104 targets, and has displayed his elusiveness in the open field, breaking 11 tackles on his 101 career catches. Doyle, an undrafted free agent, is the highest-upside option in this projected tight end market.

3. Jared Cook, Green Bay Packers (79.0)

(Joe Robbins/Getty Images)
Cook has sleepwalked from team to team, failing to consistently realize his obvious talent on a consistent basis. He was startled from his slumber for the Packers’ playoff run but, having underwhelmed for so long, it is hard to trust Cook to replicate that form in the future. Cook caught 22 passes for 285 yards and three touchdowns with the Packers’ season on the line  in the final four games, suggesting he could contribute as a role player in a vertical offense. He might be worth a gamble, but expect him to fetch a low deal on the open market.

4. Anthony Fasano, Tennessee Titans (76.5)

Fasano is rarely featured in the passing game these days, but he fulfilled a specialist role to a high level in the Titans’ downhill ground attack. As an extra blocker on the line of scrimmage, Fasano is in a class of his own. He has the physicality to matchup with defensive ends, as well as the balance to pick off linebackers at the second level. He only fits a very specific offense, but can make an impact in the right scheme. Fasano totaled only eight catches in 2016, spending a third of his 200 snaps in pass protection.

5. Jacob Tamme, Atlanta Falcons (77.6)

Tamme spends the majority of his time on the treatment table, rather than on the field, but he’s a solid option when available. He made an impact in his limited opportunities, catching 22 passes for 210 yards and three touchdowns. Sadly, season-ending shoulder surgery curtailed a promising year, leaving Tamme facing another period of rehabilitation. Reports suggest he could resurface with Kyle Shanahan in San Francisco; he’ll hope to last the entirety of 2017.

6. Vernon Davis, Washington Redskins (73.3)

Davis proved in 2016 that he is still capable of producing at a high level in the passing game. He snagged 44 passes for 583 yards, two touchdowns and a career-low two drops. In those 44 catches, he broke an impressive 13 tackles. Davis is closing in on 100 career broken tackles, highlighting his talent after the catch. He is now 33 years old, however, and his powers are on the wane.

7. Rhett Ellison, Minnesota Vikings (64.6)

Ellison offers an alternative to Fasano in the blocking tight end market. He has the versatility to play H-back as well, a role he is perhaps better suited to. The Vikings may well move on with David Morgan already in the fold for the future. A team looking for a physical option who can play on special teams could do worse than look at Ellison.

8. Dion Sims, Miami Dolphins (59.3)

The first of two failed experiments by the Dolphins, Sims saw an opportunity when teammate Jordan Cameron was forced onto IR. He has underwhelmed thus far in his NFL career, managing only 0.87 yards per snap (39th of 40 qualified tight ends in that span). Sims will likely get an opportunity because of his physical attributes, but he needs to see a boost in production soon.

9. Luke Willson, Seattle Seahawks (53.3)

Willson is a serviceable special-teamer and competent blocker, but offers very little upside. An unspectacular yet solid performer, he is the kind of player better served staying with the Seahawks. The Seattle coaching staff understand his strengths and limitations, making a return the most agreeable option all around.

10. Jordan Cameron, Miami Dolphins (63.4)

Another year, another concussion for Cameron, who hasn’t played particularly well when he has been healthy. He’s been a huge disappointment since signing for the Dolphins from the Browns, and has always struggled at the point of attack. Cameron is contemplating retirement after four consecutive concussions, but is worth a flier if he is cleared medically.

A Fun Free Agent Addition for all NFC Teams

Salute: NFL.com

Free agency doesn't start until March 9. While waiting for the franchise tags to be applied and roster cuts to be made, Gregg Rosenthal couldn't help but dream of the frenzied first few days of signings. Below: one fun player addition for every NFC team.

This is a pretty interesting list.  Adrian Peterson, if he winds up in Tampa, makes Jameis Winston a very dangerous man.  Same for Cam Newton if Kenny Stills is signed by Carolina.  Alas, the pipe dreams of mortal men usually do not come to fruition.

Top Five QB's With Most to Prove at Combine

Salute: NFL.com

While all quarterbacks are under scrutiny at the combine, these five have the most to prove to make believers out of teams in need of a leader on offense.

From where I sit on this 65-degree February day in Wisconsin, it seems to me QB's have stuff to prove every day of their careers, and it only gets worse when they become the starter.  There is no more pressure-filled job in American sports than Quarterback; and the better the QB, the worse the pressure, which is why I find it absolutely remarkable that a guy like Tom Brady, a man with unparalleled success, beautiful family, and supermodel wife, wouldn't just take his fifth Lombardi and ride off into the sunset.

Anyway, none of these five guys will likely equal Brady (some won't equal Charlie Whitehurst) and they have stuff to prove.

Cutler on the Trading Block

Salute: NFL.com

Cutler's base salary for 2017 is just $12.5 million, with another $2.5 million available in roster bonuses. There is no guaranteed money remaining on the seven-year, $126-million contract signed in January of 2014, which means the organization can release Cutler without financial penalty.

Anyone with a few extra kicking balls and a case of athletic tape has a good chance of landing Cutler.  I cannot imagine him returning more than that.

Five RB's With Most to Prove at Combine

Salute: NFL.com

Whether it's on the Lucas Oil Stadium turf during athletic testing, in an Indianapolis hotel room answering questions in an interview with an NFL team, or when facing the scrutiny of team doctors in the all-important medical checks, the combine will go a long way toward determining the draft fate of these five prospects. Here are five RBs with the most to prove in Indy:

I cannot see Clement going very high; if at all.  Wisconsin running backs have not fared well in the NFL; James White's Super Bowl notwithstanding.  Of the recent line of backs to run through Madison, Clement doesn't have the talent of Montee Ball, Melvin Gordon, or White.  Or, for that matter, Ron Dayne and Brian Calhoun.

Brate, Adams and Unsustainable Fantasy Scoring

Salute: Pro Football Focus

As proof, from 2006 to 2015, 47 different players had 50-plus targets with a touchdown on at least 10 percent of those targets (2014 Julius Thomas, with 12 touchdowns on 60 targets, was the only one of that list to crack the 20-percent threshold). In the aggregate, those 47 players scored 545 touchdowns on 4,364 targets, reaching pay-dirt 12.49 percent of the time. The next year, those same players combined for 238 touchdowns on 4,002 targets, dropping the percentage to 5.95. In other words, the guys at the upper bound of touchdown scoring saw their success rate drop to roughly half.

What does this all mean? Well, four players made the list of 50 targets and 10 percent touchdowns in 2016 — Kenny Stills (12 percent), Martellus Bennett (10.61), Cameron Brate (10.26) and Davante Adams (10.17). All four were fantasy producers to varying degrees last year, and odds are good that all four will be at the least less efficient in 2017.

Adams was drafted for $3 last season.  Hard to see where he won't triple that number, even at the project lower figures for 2017.   He does play with Aaron Rodgers, so it's likely worth the risk.  If Bennett stays in New England, not likely, he'd be worth a decent figure, too, because of Brady.  And if Jameis Winston continues to develop in Tampa and Kenny Stills ends up with a quality QB, you could see spending money on them, and getting the commensurate production, too.

Cards Have No Interest in Cutler

Salute: Pro Football Talk
Kent Somers of the Arizona Republic reports that the Cardinals have “zero interest” in bringing Cutler to the desert this offseason.

With the clock ticking on Carson Palmer's career, figure Arizona to find his replacement in the draft rather than free agency.

DeSean Jackson Back to Philly?

Salute: Hail to the District

There have been plenty of glaring signs pointing to the fact that Jackson, who is a free agent after this season, not only has little intention of resigning with the Redskins, but wants to return to Philadelphia and sign with the Eagles this upcoming offseason.

Salute: Pro Football Talk

“It definitely is a great story or ending, I guess you could say,” Jackson said on Adam Schefter of ESPN’s podcast. “Starting your career somewhere then going to a division rival team [and] having the possibility of maybe going back. You just kind of think about all of that when you start somewhere maybe you could finish it.

Yeah, DJax will be an Eagle.  And Philadelphia, not to mention Carson Wentz, will be better for it.

Vikings Expect Improvement From Treadwell

Salute: Pro Football Talk

“[Treadwell] is going to be like any young player that’s going from year one to year two. This is going to be an offseason that is very critical,” Shurmur recently said, via the Minneapolis Star Tribune.

One catch for 15 yards from your first-rounder, yeah, I'd say improvement is expected.  Another season like that, injury-filled or not, and you wonder whether it's time to move on.

Last season, Treadwell went for $19 at auction.  He's worth about 10% of that figure unless he gets hot in the preseason.

How Can Browns Turn Around?

Salute: Bleacher Report

There isn't a team in the National Football League in better position to be a player in free agency this spring than the Cleveland Browns. Per Spotrac, the Browns have a staggering $105 million in cap space with which to improve the club in 2017.

Let's not forget the boatload of picks possessed by the Browns; including two first-rounders at #1/#12 and the first pick in the second round at #33.

Top 3 Off-Season Needs: Tampa Bay

Salute: Pro Football Rumors

In advance of March 9, the start of free agency in the NFL, Pro Football Rumors will detail each team’s three most glaring roster issues. We’ll continue this year’s series with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, who added three wins to their 2015 record to finish 9-7 under first-year head coach Dirk Koetter.

Franchise Tender Amount Won't Change if Peterson Released

Salute: Pro Football Talk

Under the 2011 CBA, the non-exclusive franchise tenders are determined based not on what any one player made in 2016 or will make in 2017, but on the five-year average of the percentage that the tenders for each position consume under the total cap.

Creative Accounting With the Dallas Cowboys

Salute: Pro Football Talk

According to Todd Archer of ESPN.com, the Cowboys have freed up $17.3 million in short-term cap space by restructuring the contracts of left tackle Tyron Smith and center Travis Frederick.

This is always, without fail, a dangerous way to manipulate the salary cap and guarantee the Cowboys will have a year, somewhere down the line, filled with dead money.  The team has TWICE done this with Romo's contract and will be paying out money to him after he's with someone else and/or retired.

Such is the mentality with teams in a win-now mode.

Jags-Dolphins Talk Branden Albert Trade

Salute: Pro Football Rumors

On Thursday, the Dolphins decided to release tackle Branden Albert. That is, until at least one team phoned them with trade interest. For now, Albert remains on the roster as the Dolphins explore trade possibilities. Apparently, it didn’t take long for serious talks to materialize. The Jaguars and Dolphins have talked trade, according to Armando Salguero of The Miami Herald.

GM's Skeptical About Adrian Peterson

Salute: Pro Football Rumors

“It only takes one team to do something stupid,” an NFL contract negotiator told La Canfora, “but I can’t see there being much out there for him once the Vikings let him go.”

Peterson did nothing in 2016 due to injury.  He missed almost the entirely of the 2014 season due to suspension.  In 2015, he finished with 259 points, the #2 RB and the #28 overall fantasy player.  I suspect that he will be pretty good in 2017, if in a somewhat diminished role as compared to his earlier years in Minnesota.

How Long Will Aaron Rodgers Be Good at Football?

Salute: Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel

There’s no doubt in my mind that Rodgers will be able to adjust to diminishing athleticism as he gets older and some of his mobility starts to wane.

Whatever the future holds, Rodgers is still pretty good as of this afternoon.  He was the #1 fantasy QB and the #1 fantasy player overall in 2016.  He's worth having on your team even at high prices.  We're a Wisconsin-based league comprised of Packer fans, so Rodgers is always auctioned at a premium ($65 last season).  He'll go for about the same this year.  In other parts of the country, he should go for, at minimum, $50.

He's worth it.

Also: Aaron Nagler is worth a Twitter follow.  He puts out some very good stuff.

Miami Extends Cameron Wake

Salute: Rotoworld

Dolphins signed DE Cameron Wake to a two-year, $19 million extension. The deal includes $11 million guaranteed.

Wake was an All-Pro in 2016, finishing with 11.5 sacks and five forced fumbles.  He also proves that a very good way to get wealthy in America is to have the ability to rush the passer.

Is Rob Kelly the RB1 in Washington?

Salute: CSN Midatlantic

Will Rob Kelly be the lead running back?

Kelly turned out to be an epiphany for Washington in 2016.  He didn't break the 5-point barrier until week 7 and scored 103 points in an eight-week stretch beginning mid-season.  In just those games, he ended up as the #32 RB.  He's likely worth $10-$15 in the 2017 auction.

Don't Forget the 2016 Injured in Your Fantasy Prep

Salute: Pro Football Focus

One could argue that the some of the bargains are because we don’t know whether they will come back at the same level, or even come back at all. Fair, but after witnessing Jordy Nelson’s big return this year, I’m will to put my neck out there for some of these players and so should you.

For some reason, Rob Gronkowski isn't on this list.  But, I'm pretty sure you wouldn't have forgotten him in any case.

Players Who Hurt/Helped Themselves in Free Agency

Salute: Sports Illustrated

List of Notable NFL Cuts

Salute: NFL.com

The first two weeks following Super Bowl LI have seen a handful of notable players cut by their respective teams, as some organizations aim to clear cap space in anticipation of the start of the new league year. Veterans who are suddenly deemed expendable have been released, as have underachieving players who entered the league as high draft selections. We've assembled a round-up of the most notable moves so far.

NFL Analyst Questions Cousins' Value

Salute 24-7 Sports

"The Redskins are in a position of strength on the long-term aspect," Brandt said. "A long-term deal can happen if Kirk Cousins' camp is willing to not negotiate on the level of the franchise tag number. That did not happen last year.
"They don’t have to be a slave to the Andrew Luck deal.”

I tend to agree with this.  I'm not sure any team is willing to pay a contract at franchise-tag level which will be $21.395M for 2017.  Andrew Luck makes, on average, $24.5M per year and Aaron Rodgers averages $22M.  It will be hard for Cousins' agents to make the case that he deserves equal or better money than Luck and Rodgers.

Complete List of NFL Free Agents

Salute: Pro Football Rumors

Pro Football Rumors’ up-to-date list of 2017 NFL free agents is below. These are players who are eligible for restricted or unrestricted free agency after the 2016 season. The player’s 2017 age is in parentheses. Players are generally sorted by the position at which they played most in ’16, or the position at which their most recent team listed them.

NFL Franchise Tag Candidates

Salute: Pro Football Rumors

Starting today, NFL teams will be able to place franchise and transition tags on potential free agents for the first time. While the window for franchise tags is open, most clubs won’t actually tag any players right away.

Patriots and Brady Talk Extension

Salute: Pro Football Rumors

Tom Brady’s is under contract with the Patriots through the 2019 season, but the team is already getting a head start on extension talks. The five-time Super Bowl winner is in early talks with the Pats about a new deal, Jeff Howe of the Boston Herald tweets.

Brady will be 40 this season.  And while he says he wants to play into his mid-40's, his wife wanted him to retire after the Super Bowl.  To me, this is a wink-and-a-nudge reward for Brady's unselfishness in giving up money to keep his team intact.  Which, also to me, is the action of a big-time winner.  Whatever money Brady can get, he damned well deserves because there aren't too many guys running around with five Super Bowl rings.

As for playing into his mid-40's, well, if it were me, I'd be spending more time with Gisele and the kids.  And I have more experience with being in my mid-40's than Brady.

Steelers Mum on Tag For Bell

Salute: Pro Football Talk

“The tag is always an option, and it’s something we’ll use if necessary,” said Steelers GM Kevin Colbert.
Bell was the #3 RB in fantasy football in 2016 despite missing three games due to suspension.  He gives Pittsburgh a very deadly weapon out of the backfield.  I cannot imagine a scenario where the Steelers allow him to reach the open market.

Romo Expects Cut, Not Trade.

Salute: Pro Football Talk

Ed Werder of ESPN reports that Romo is expecting to be released, not traded.

I seem to have mentioned something about this.  Nobody is going to give up players and/or picks just for the honor of picking up Romo's massive contract.  Nobody.  Thus, teams will wait.  And this is probably the best thing that could happen for Romo.  He'll get the guaranteed money Dallas owes him and he'll go to the highest bidder/best situation.

I still think Dallas is better off re-negotiating and keeping him.  It's the NFL, one weird play and Dak Prescott goes down and so does a season.  Look at what happened in Minnesota last season.  Teddy Bridgewater gets hurt, Shaun Hill isn't the answer, and Minnesota has to spend a first-rounder and a bunch of money on Sam Bradford.  Having a viable backup saves two of those moves if you're the Vikings.  And bringing in Bradford didn't even help save the season.

As good as Dak is, mark my words, there will come a time when Dallas truly regrets not having Tony Romo and his talent/experience ready to come in to save the day.

Top Ten Free Agent Quarterbacks

Salute: Pro Football Focus

Here’s a look at the top 10 free agent quarterbacks currently set to hit the open market.

With the possible exception of Cousins, the savior of your franchise isn't on this list.  If you're relying on Geno Smith or Mark Sanchez to ride in on their white horse and save the day, you best step away from the bottle.

One possibly intriguing name that isn't on this list is Kansas City QB Nick Foles.  Indication out of KC is that the Chiefs won't keep him around for 2017.  If he hits the market, he could have some value.  What happened to him in St. Louis wasn't all his fault and his two starts in KC were mixed, but remember, he did have a 27TD/2 INT season not that long ago in Philly.

Hey, he's better than Sanchez.

Top Ten Potential Free Agent Running Backs

Salute: Pro Football Focus

Last offseason, we saw running backs Lamar Miller, Matt Forte and Alfred Morris, among others, sign with a new team. Here we’ll take a look at the top 10 running backs who are, potentially, about to hit the open market.

I cannot see any way possible that Le'Veon Bell leaves Pittsburgh.  That would be madness.  It came out today that Lacy has been fined repeatedly for his weight.  If he stays in Green Bay, it won't be a very big contract.  It would surprise me if Blount left New England because Foxboro is the only place he has had professional success.  And I'm shocked that Murray is leaving Oakland.  To me, he's the best back on the market if Bell re-signs.

Stability is the First Step Toward Success

Salute: Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel

Notice the three teams that show up on all those lists: the Patriots, Steelers and Packers. What do they have in common? Quarterbacks, and stability in the front office and at head coach.

Two teams are working very hard to join these teams: Tennessee and Oakland.  The common denominator to all these franchises is coaching and front-office stability.  And Hall-of-Fame-level quarterbacking helps, too.  Are Marcus Mariota and Derek Carr headed toward the levels of Tom Brady, Ben Roethlisberger and Aaron Rodgers?  Certainly within the context of their franchises.  But, barring injury and with continuing growth, they sure can be.

Titans Cautious With Mariota

Salute: Pro Football Talk

“I think we’re going to be really smart about how we handle him and probably be overly cautious,” Mularkey said, via Paul Kuharsky of ESPN.com.

That would be wise because Tennessee is going places.  Their exotic smashmouth offense is only a couple of pieces away from being scary.  Some defensive upgrades will help, too.  The Titans are a franchise that is well run and building continuity which seem to be the first steps for a franchise to start achieving consistent success.

Players Facing Franchise Tag Should Let It Happen

Salute: Pro Football Talk

So Jones should simply wait for the tag to be applied. If it is, and if a long-term deal isn’t done by the true deadline of July 15, he’ll get a significant salary for one year, be entitled to a 20-percent raise if tagged again, and perhaps most importantly be able to check the franchise tag box once on a career tag scale that, if it ever gets to two, would likely never get to three, since a third tag would make him eligible for the quarterback tender or a 44-percent raise, whichever is higher.

Big Ben Not Top-Tier Fantasy QB

Salute: Pro Football Focus

It’s about how we’ve all overrated Ben Roethlisberger and why he may not be the quarterback you thought he was.
This started when I had an itch to find out why it seemed Roethlisberger “busted” so much from a fantasy perspective. When I say bust, I’m referring to games with fewer than 14 fantasy points in standard leagues, which translates to 250 passing yards and one touchdown (or variants on that when turnovers and/or rushing come into play). That’s not too much to ask for from a guy who’s considered one of the greats, right?

Roethlisberger HAS NEVER been considered a top-flight fantasy QB.  But, he's been a damned good backup for anyone who has ever had him.  Further, his salary has never been that of a top-tier guy.  Over the years, his auction values have been:

2004: $6
2005: $6
2009: $8
2012: $21
2013: $12
2014: $8
2015: $29
2016: $30

With the exception of the last two years, none of those auction values are tremendously out of line.  Especially considering that Tom Brady had auction values of:

2010: $69
2011: $70
2012: $90
2013: $74

Or Peyton Manning's auction numbers were:

2005: $47
2007: $62
2008: $55
2010: $72
2011: $45

Or that Drew Brees went for $69 in 2010 or that Aaron Rodgers went for $65 in 2010, $64 in 2014, and $65 in 2016.

Roethlisberger didn't produce the points those players did, but he put up good numbers while being paid a helluva lot less.  And there is value in that.

Jabril Peppers NOT a First-Round Pick?

Salute: Detroit Free Press

The former Michigan football Swiss Army knife did it all on the college football field. He played everywhere. He played 10 positions — in a single game.  But that’s not good in the in the eyes of the NFL, which loves to fit round pegs into round holes.

This is insanity.  OF COURSE, Jabril Peppers is a first-round pick.  I have never, ever, heard of any NFL team that didn't like versatility among its players.  For the love of all things holy, Houston uses J.J. Watt on offense; even as a Wildcat QB on the goal-line.   For another, Deone Buchanan was a safety out of college and now plays LB for Arizona; same for Thomas Davis in Carolina.  Believe me, someone will find a use for Jabril Peppers as a first-round pick.  There shouldn't be anyone crazy enough to believe otherwise.  Anybody think Bill Belichick wouldn't drool over having Peppers available at 32?  Anyone?  Anyone?

Should Giants Sign Adrian Peterson?

Salute: New York Daily News

The Giants won’t have to break the bank to land Peterson, who will turn 32 next month, either. He might no longer be the transcendent force that ripped through defenses for the better part of a decade, but he can play an invaluable role for an offense that finished 29th in rushing last season (88.2 yards per game).

If DeAndre Hopkins was the #1 season-killer in fantasy football, Peterson may be #2.  I should know, I had him.  At a whopping $72.  Ouch.  Peterson got hurt week two and didn't do diddly all year.   Going forward, he still has value as a low-end #1 RB or a top-of-the-line #2.  He may turn 32 next month, but there's still tread on the tires.  That said, anything more than $25 is a mistake in this season's auction draft.

DeAndre Hopkins: Can This Season Killer Rebound?

Salute: NFL Spin Zone

Who was the worst fantasy pick in 2016, the least valuable player? Let’s lay down the contenders, because there’s no doubt that DeAndre Hopkins disappointed everyone more than anyone.

Very simply put, DeAndre Hopkins was a season-killer.  In all six of my leagues, whoever had the misfortune of owning Hopkins, stunk like three-day-old fish.  In the Total Insanity Football League, he is owned by a perennial playoff favorite; a team that won it all in 2014 and lost the championship in 2015.  In 2016, that team missed the playoffs.

As for Hopkins himself, he went from a 2015 season where he scored 301 points and was the 4th best WR and the 22nd highest scorer overall to last year's dumpster fire when he scored just 160 and was 38th among receivers.

To make matter worse, in the Insanity League, his owner spent $50 of his $300 salary cap on him and is on the hook for $56 more in 2017.

At auction this year, his bid will depend very highly on who is the QB.  If it's Tony Romo, he'll once again be worth $30+.  If it's Osweiler or Savage, let someone else take the risk unless you can get him for single digits.  In that instance, it might be worth taking him and extending a low-risk contract in case it takes Houston TWO offseasons to straighten out their quarterback quagmire.

Jay Ajayi Could Be Major Threat in 2017

Salute: NFL Spin Zone

Consistency is key and the Dolphins would be wise to bolster their offensive line via free agency and the 2017 NFL Draft.

Ajayi finished as the 11th highest scoring RB in 2016 with 198 points despite not playing in week one and playing very sparingly until week 5.  In weeks six and seven, Ajayi became a sensation by scoring 61 points in those two games.  He is likely worth north of $40 in an auction draft and possibly more depending on how the Kenny Stills negotiation ends up and if the Dolphins bolster their offensive line through free agency and the draft.

Franchise Tag Values by Position

Salute: Fansided.com

On Wednesday, February 15, all 32 teams in the NFL will begin to place their franchise tag on pending free agents. A franchise tag gives the player’s team an extension to sign them to a long-term deal, while ensuring they will play for that team at least one more season. If the team places a non-exclusive tag on them, they can receive offers from other teams, with the original team getting the opportunity to match the deal.
The franchise tag period is a two-week period that will end on March 1.

Here is a look at the projected cap values according to Joel Corry of CBSSPorts.com with an expected salary cap of 168MM.

Schefter: Houston Best for Romo

Salute: Torotimes.com

The best fit would be a winning organization that can protect him with an offensive line and has a chance to be competitive.
Denver’s got questions about its offensive line. I think Houston’s got some questions. I think Houston would probably be the best fit to me. Especially on offense.

Houston's defense certainly helps, too, because whoever ends up as the starting QB doesn't have to win games by himself.  Now, to see if Houston is short-sighted enough to spend draft picks to get Romo rather than waiting until he's cut.

Bills in Salary Cap Jail

Salute: Buffalo News

The Bills are so top-heavy with salaries that they're severely limited in their ability to improve on last season's 7-9 finish, or, for that matter, build a roster finally capable of ending a 17-year playoff drought.

There is money that can be saved, but it won't be without some discomfort.  QB-Tyrod Taylor will be guaranteed $30.75 if he's on the roster beyond March 11.  That almost guarantees he'll play somewhere else in 2017.  Marcell Darius is due $16.4M after missing half of 2016.  And OT-Cordy Glenn is due $14.2M but hasn't played to that level of salary.

Victor Cruz to Denver?

Salute: ESPN.com

Bottom line is John Elway will has plenty of salary cap space and he’s not afraid to use it.
Elway, the Denver Broncos executive vice president of football operations/general manager, has said that team will be "involved in free agency." And to that end the Broncos were already working Monday to at least meet with wide receiver Victor Cruz.

Cruz returned from missing multiple seasons with injuries to post 89 fantasy points; finishing as the #78 WR in 2016.  He may have some value to Denver, but if he ends up there without Tony Romo or Jimmy Garoppolo at QB, he won't have much value to you because you won't get points for Trevor Simien under-throwing him.

A Preview of "The Underwear Olympics"

Salute: Raiders.com

We’re just a week removed from Super Bowl LI, and the focus has already shifted toward the NFL Combine, which will take place on February 28, 2017 in Indianapolis.

The Giants Housecleaning Continues

Salute: Pro Football Rumors

Donnell earned $1.671MM in 2016 but wound up with just 15 catches for 92 yards and one touchdown.

Depending on where he ends up, Donnell may be worth $1 as your backup tight end.  And that may be stretching things considering his 24-point 2016 season.

Orlovsky Out of Detroit?

Salute: Pro Football Rumors

The Dan Orlovsky era may be over in Detroit, according to Dave Birkett of the Detroit Free Press. Orlovsky sent out a fairly cryptic tweet yesterday in which he wrote, “Detroit Vs Everybody. It’ll always be where it started for me. It’ll always have a piece of my heart.”

Are the good times really over for good?  It's always sad to see the end of an era.

As for the impact this transaction will have on fantasy football, well, in a word bupkis.  None.  Orlovsky has never had any fantasy value.  And if you ever thought he did, you must be the type who buys a pre-season magazine at a gas station on the way to the draft.

Top 25 Free Agents of 2017

Salute: Pro Football Focus

Many of the players topping the list of upcoming free agents won’t get as far as the open market, and will instead be slapped with the franchise tag and kept in house, either playing the 2017 season under that one-year guaranteed figure, or will work out a new deal under that tag.

Franchise Tag Predictions for all 32 Teams

The 2017 offseason is off and running. Veterans have already started to get pink slips, and Wednesday marks the first day that teams can place the franchise tag on key free agents.

Charley Casserly's first-round mock draft with trades.  Enjoy.

Giants Cut Cruz and Jennings

Salute: Pro Football Talk

The Giants’ salary cap cuts will include running back Rashad Jennings, ESPN.com’s Jordan Raanan reported Monday.
Per previous reports, the Giants will also cut veteran wide receiver Victor Cruz.

Neither player has a great deal of fantasy value.  Jennings scored 117 points last season, 35th among RB's.  Cruz just 89, which was the 78th highest among WR's.  Jennings may be worth a buck or two at auction.  Cruz may be an in-season signing if he shows he's healthy and has the potential to be productive.

Fantasy Impact of Running Inside the 20-Yard-Line

Salute: Pro Football Focus

For fantasy purposes, looking at red-zone carries really misses the boat. Our attention should really be on carries inside the 5-yard line, which is an area of the field I’m calling the “green zone.” Those in the know might remember Tom Coughlin referring to the red zone as the green zone because “green is go and red is stop.” Off of that logic, where we really see offenses “go” into the end zone on the ground is inside the 5-yard line.

Top Ten Upwardly Ranked Players

Salute: Pro Football Focus

Earlier this week, the Pro Football Focus analysis team released its ranking of the top 101 players in the 2016 season. Over half of the players who made the list this year did not make it in 2015, and over two dozen were selected for the first time of their careers. With that said, here are 10 players who have never made PFF’s Top 101, but are trending upwards and could be featured in 2017.

I have no problems with any of these choices except one:  Nick Perry.  He's entering year six of his career and he's just starting to play.  Sure, he's had some injuries, but he has vastly underplayed his draft position.  With Clay Matthews slowing down and slowed by injuries, Perry put up some decent numbers, but seldom with the game on the line.

Is Patrick Mahomes the Best QB in the Draft?

Salute: USA Today

We’re used to seeing productive passers come out of Lubbock and flame out in the NFL, and Mahomes faces the tall task of bucking that trend.

There is no question Mahomes has the arm and the guts.  He played through a broken wrist last season,  But do his talents translate to the NFL?  I think he's worth the risk in the second or third round.  I don't think anyone needs to rush to get him.

What Team is the Best Fit for DeShaun Watson?

Salute: USA Today.com

But which NFL team would be the best fit for the talented junior from Death Valley?  If you ask NFL.com’s Bucky Brooks, it’s the Kansas City Chiefs.

I am not convinced that Cleveland will take Watson number one overall.  And I don't think Cleveland uses their 12th pick.  It would not surprise me if Watson was, indeed, available for Kansas City.

Six Teams With Most Salary Cap Room for 2017

These six teams have the most money as the NFL moves into the 2017 league season.

Jimmy Garoppolo's Trade Value to Keep Climbing?

Salute: NFL.com

If the Browns have designs on offering the No. 12 overall pick in the 2017 NFL Draft to coax Bill Belichick into parting with his valuable Tom Brady insurance, they might just discover that equally desperate franchises such as the 49ers and Bears are willing to up the ante.

Because if there's one franchise that desperately needs a good break, it's New England.  You know the old phrase, "luck is the residue of design?"  Well, the Patriots seem to go about proving that every single season.

Ryan Fitzpatrick Can Be Yours!

Salute: Pro Sports Daily

New York will have to pay Fitzpatrick $5 million of the $10 million he was set to be paid in 2017 as part of the signing bonus portion of his contract.

Fitzpatrick scored just 137 points last season and heaved an unsightly 17 interceptions.  Unless he lands a starting gig somewhere else (highly doubtful) he has no value in an auction draft.  Or any other style of draft.

The Weighty Matter of Eddie Lacy

Salute: Pro Sports Daily.com

So there’s a good chance Lacy will have to sign a one-year deal to prove to the league his ankle is fine and he can get, and keep, the weight off.

I think Green Bay has to re-sign Lacy.  I don't believe there is an RB that is worth picking at 29 if Cook and Fournette are off the board.  Besides, the Packers need help all over the defense.

As good as Ty Montgomery was at times in '16, he's no Lacy, who can rip off big chunks of yards up the middle and is a surprisingly nimble receiver out of the backfield.

Politics to Prevent Bears From Signing Free Agents?

Salute: Pro Football Rumors

The Bears are projected to have nearly $55MM in cap space this offseason, but they might have difficulty spending it if a new Illinois workers’ comp bill is passed. The bill, which the McCaskey family (owners of the Bears) is spearheading, would deprive injured workers – including professional athletes – of health care beginning at the age of 35

It's no surprise the McCaskey family supports this bill.  After all, Mike Ditka once said of patriarch George Halas, "he throws around nickels like manhole covers."

Your New Bills QB is Cardale Jones?

Salute: Pro Football Rumors

The Bills are still working through the idea of retaining quarterback Tyrod Taylor, but general manager Doug Whaley is thought to be in favor of starting 2016 fourth-round pick Cardale Jones next season, according to Vic Carucci of the Buffalo News.

Taylor had a very nice fantasy season last year scoring 304 points, good for #11 among QB's.  He's worth some money in an auction draft because his rushing numbers make up for what he might lack as a passer.  Especially in leagues that don't award six points for a passing TD.  I would be very comfortable at $15-$20 next season, regardless of where he ends up, just so long as he's the starter.

Alshon Jeffrey to Philadelphia?

Salute: Fantasy Pros

NFL Insider Jason La Canfora reports that "several league sources anticipate" the Philadelphia Eagles pursuing Chicago Bears wide receiver Alshon Jeffery, who is an impending free agent, this offseason.

Jeffrey had a down year with just 131 points, good for 53rd among WR's.  Of course, losing four games to a suspension and playing with a whole bunch of different QB's doesn't exactly help a guy pile up the points.  Follow his situation closely.  He could be worth $25 or he could be worth an empty Gatorade cup.

Blount's Future in New England Uncertain

Salute: Fantasy Pros

Blount, who is an impending free agent, will likely have the opportunity to test the open market. He is coming off of a career year in 2016 in which he accumulated 1,161 yards rushing and 18 touchdowns while playing in all 16 games.

Blount finished as the #8 RB with 220 fantasy points.  Depending on where he lands, he should be worth north of $30.

Matt Forte to Remain in New York?

Salute: Fantasy Pros.com

Forte, 31, will likely remain with the Jets next season, according to Cimini. The dual-threat running back played in 14 games in 2016 while totaling 1,076 yards and eight touchdowns.

Forte is due $4M plus a $1M portion of his signing bonus in 2017.  He was the #19 RB scoring 176 points last season.  At auction, he's worth upwards of $20-$25 as a 2RB.

WR Prospect John Ross to Undergo Surgery

Salute: NFL.com

How the Super Bowl Could Affect the 2017 NFL Draft

Salute: NFL.com

The NFL is known as a copycat league, where successful teams are often emulated. I reached out to some personnel executives around the league after the Patriots' win over the Falcons in Super Bowl LI to see if the success of these two teams would have any impact on the upcoming offseason.

Jack Del Rio Gets New Deal

Salute: Pro Football Talk

“The Raiders have torn up Jack Del Rio’s original contract and rewarded him with a new four-year deal,” owner Mark Davis said in a statement Friday night.

This is smart.  Between the very excellent Reggie McKenzie upstairs and Del Rio on the field, Oakland is beginning to build stability within their organization.  They also have their franchise QB in Derek Carr and a franchise defender in Khalil Mack.

Consistent winning to commence.

Myles Garrett Dreams Big; Cleveland is Unamused

Salute: Bleacher Report

In a video posted by ESPN, the former Texas A&M defensive end pleaded for the Cowboys and owner Jerry Jones to make a trade with the Cleveland Browns—who own the No. 1 selection in April's draft—in order to acquire him.

Nothing like getting your four-year minimum stay in Cleveland off to a pleasant start.  I'm sure Browns fans, who have had sooo much to cheer about for these last few millennia, will completely forget about this.

Overvalued Dynasty League Players

Salute: Fantasy Pros.com

When discussing an overvalued player, it’s not an attempt to say the player isn’t good or won’t have useful fantasy days in the future — which is important to understand. This is solely about these players as assets, and whether their value is higher than it should be. It’s about assessing risk and possibly looking to invest in a similarly-valued asset who is safer. It’s about looking down the road and trying to figure out what a player’s value might be 12 months from now.

Cincinnati Enquirer Mock Draft

Salute: Cincinnati.com

How much credence can you put in any mock draft at this point in time? Honestly, not much. Team needs are about to change dramatically as free agency approaches and the Scouting Combine begins later this month and will move players up and down boards depending on performance and medical evaluations.

DeSean Jackson Wants to Stay in Washington

Salute: Pro Football Talk

During an interview with Larry Michael on CSN, DeSean Jackson said he’d like to stay and build on what the offense has accomplished.
Jackson finished 2016 with 161 points, the 35th highest among wide receivers.  In an auction draft, he's worth, at most $15.  He's a very low-end starter, maybe a fourth WR at this point in his career.

Tyrod Taylor: No Hometown Discount For Bills

Salute: Pro Football Talk

Vic Carucci of the Buffalo News reports that Tyrod Taylor is “unwilling” to restructure his contract to stay with the Bills in a way that would reduce his pay.

And this, as much as anything else, led Taylor to Cleveland.

Kirk Cousins Capitol Contract Complications

Salute: Pro Football Talk

Until the deadline for using the franchise tag expires, the starting point for a long-term Cousins contract sits at $23.94 million for 2017.

The Redskins put themselves in this jackpot after the '15 season by not signing Cousins long-term because, I think, they weren't quite sure what they had.  Now, they know.  And it's going to cost long green to keep him.  Oops.

Is Brady the Best FOOTBALL PLAYER of All-Time?

Salute: NFL.com

Now that that's (largely) settled, a different question arises: Is Tom Brady the greatest football player of all time, regardless of position?

None of these guys voted for Walter Payton.  They should have.  Because 22 Walter Paytons would beat 22 of anybody else.

Chiefs GM: Charles Still a Chief

Salute: NFL.com

"He's working like the dickens to get himself ready for '17. We'll see what happens in March, but right now I see him as a Chief," Dorsey said, per the Kansas City Star's Terez Paylor.

Charles has played just eight games over two years.  Kansas City could save $6M by cutting Charles.

In our league, one of our owners is on the hook for $37 and $42 for the next two seasons.  If you are drafting Charles in an auction draft, be very wary of his health.  At this point, I wouldn't gamble more than $10 and I wouldn't count on Charles to be more than a third or fourth RB.  In other words, let someone else take the risk if you don't have to.

Carson Palmer Returning for 2017

Salute: Pro Football Talk

“My intent was to take some time after the season to get away and see where I was physically and mentally,” Palmer said. “On both fronts, I can say I’m ready to get back to work and prepare for the 2017 season. This is a phenomenal group with a very special opportunity in front of it.

There are, naturally, 17-and-a-half million additional reasons to return.

Palmer is worth less than $10 in next year's auction drafts.

Tyrod Taylor on Browns Radar

Salute: Pro Football Rumors

Patriots backup Jimmy Garoppolo remains the Browns’ No. 1 choice at quarterback, but the club has backup plans in case the price for Garoppolo is too steep. Cleveland will have Bills signal-caller Tyrod Taylor on their “radar” if he’s released by Buffalo, reports Mary Kay Cabot of Cleveland.com.

I could see this happening.  It wouldn't surprise me if the Bills moved on from Taylor.  And the Browns have $50M of cap space to play with.  This also would remove the pressure of taking a QB with one of their first-round picks.

Jay Cutler to the J-E-T-S? Surely, You J-E-S-T!

Salute: Fantasy Pros.com

NFL Insider Jason La Canfora believes the New York Jets could possibly acquire Chicago Bears quarterback Jay Cutler if he becomes available this offseason.

A match made in heaven.  5-11 heaven.

Mayock: I'd be scared to death to draft QB in top 10 this year

Salute: NFL.com

Clemson's Deshaun Watson, North Carolina's Mitch Trubisky and Notre Dame's DeShone Kizer are considered three of the most promising options in a relatively weak pool of draftable quarterbacks, and NFL Network draft expert Mike Mayock left little doubt about whether any of them merit a top-10 selection in the draft.

Top 101 Players From Pro Football Focus

Salute: Pro Football Focus

Here’s a quick reminder of the basic criteria:
This list is based solely on 2016 play. Nothing that happened in previous years or may happen in the future is accounted for. This isn’t about class or talent, it’s about performance throughout the 2016 NFL season.
This list is created with an “all positions are created equal” mantra. So, you won’t see 32 quarterbacks heading the list — even though that is the game’s most valuable position. Instead, we take a look at how guys played relative to what is expected from their position.

Julius Thomas Cap Casualty?

Joel Corry of CBS Sports reports $3 million of Julius Thomas' $7 million base salary becomes fully guaranteed on February 10.

Thomas signed a 5-year/$46M deal prior to the 2015 season and has not performed to the level of money he is making.  In 21 games, his stat line is 76/736/9.

Further, he has burned many a fantasy owner who expected his Denver-level of production to continue in Jacksonville.  It hasn't happened.

If Thomas isn't released on Friday, it will be a surprise.

In an auction draft, depending on where he ends up, he may be worth up to $3.  And not one penny more.

James Starks Era Ends in Green Bay

Salute: Packers.com

The Green Bay Packers have released RB James Starks with a non-football injury designation.

If this doesn't end Starks' career, it certainly will end his fantasy football utility.  He has had little to no value for a couple of years and any value he did have is now gone with the wind.

Remember When NFL Parity Was a Thing?

Salute: Football Outsiders.com

While the NFL is not quite on the NBA's level as a league with few legitimate contenders, there really is not a valid claim to parity right now.

I find this highly interesting.  Especially when you consider the very lengthy continued success of teams like New England, Pittsburgh, and Green Bay.  Of course, you have three Hall-of-Fame-level QB's there.  Which helps.

Injuries in the "Post-Probable" Era

Salute: Football Outsiders.com

I wasn't sure how this change would affect NFL injury reports, so I have been eagerly waiting to amass enough data to examine this rule change. Now that the FO Injury Database has been updated and cleaned through the first half of 2016, let's take a look at the data.

The injury report is the bane of the fantasy footballer's existence.

Let me tell you a little story...

Once upon a time, a certain fantasy football writer co-owned a fantasy team with his brother-in-law.  On that team was Hall of Fame QB John Elway.  Well, one season, Mr. Elway had a problem with his groin.  He was listed as questionable (groin) for several weeks and we assumed this meant he would likely play.  I mean, his backup wasn't a Hall-of-Famer and it was past the midway point in the season, thus, he would likely play due to the importance of these games.

So, for three straight weeks, my brother-in-law and I started Elway.  And for three straight weeks, Elway DID NOT PLAY!  Naturally, we lost all three weeks and our season ended up floating merrily in the latrine.

Damn injury reports.

On the bright side, this did give us a new team name, one which is still used this very afternoon.

The Questionable Groins.

Good times, man.  Good times.

Offseason Fantasy Football Wishlist

Salute: Pro Football Focus

These are more or less the seven transactions I’d most like to see, in no particular order. The obvious caveats apply, namely that it’s the first week of February and we’re still a ways away from the draft and the start of free agency. However, I also don’t want to waste your time with fantasy fantasies (zing!) While each of the situations listed below remain fluid, there is enough smoke to at least consider them viable (and sensible) possibilities. So let’s get to it.

Top Offseason Questions for All 32 Teams

Salute: Pro Football Focus

With the offseason now here for all but two NFL teams, it’s time to start thinking about the future. Whether this means personnel changes, draft targets, or free-agency strategy, each team must carefully sketch out a plan for the next eight months.
Here we identify the biggest offseason question for every team.

Place Your Bets! 2017 Super Bowl Odds Set!

Salute: Sports Day

According to ESPN radio host and AP odds provider R.J. Bell, Dallas is tied for the second best odds to win Super Bowl 52.

I'm not a gambling man by any stretch of the imagination.  However, if I were to legally wager on this thing, and legally is the only way I would ever dream of doing such a thing, I would put a little money on Tennessee (I love what they're doing in Nashville), Pittsburgh (because they always have a chance to win), Seattle (ditto), and Green Bay (because I want to be happy AND have more money).

Of course, as long as that Brady guy can lift his throwing arm, you cannot discount the possibility that he will go on another rampage leaving an extensive trail of broken football teams in his wake because he is a very, very, bad man.
