Creative Accounting With the Dallas Cowboys

Salute: Pro Football Talk

According to Todd Archer of ESPN.com, the Cowboys have freed up $17.3 million in short-term cap space by restructuring the contracts of left tackle Tyron Smith and center Travis Frederick.

This is always, without fail, a dangerous way to manipulate the salary cap and guarantee the Cowboys will have a year, somewhere down the line, filled with dead money.  The team has TWICE done this with Romo's contract and will be paying out money to him after he's with someone else and/or retired.

Such is the mentality with teams in a win-now mode.
